I purchased this maocha in Kunming in May 2016. After trying lots of maocha, I found a tea that passed muster, and bought a single kilo that I carefully carried home on the flight back to Hong Kong! I walked through the airports on both ends with 1.5kg of maocha in three carrier bags!

I speak Cantonese, but my command of Mandarin isn't anywhere near as good as my Cantonese, although I've learnt a fair bit more over the last few years. When I tried this maocha, I was struggling to communicate with the dealer, and couldn't get a point of origin for this maocha, despite my best efforts to make myself understood. After trying two maocha they had on offer side by side, this is the tea I went with, which was actually the cheaper of the two. When fresh, there was a lovely warm milk note with deep floral and fruit character under the surface, good mouthfeel and good huigan as well. I was sold! 

This maocha is likely to be from 2014 or 2015, since I'd arrived in Kunming far too early to be sourcing 2016 maocha!

Now, after mellowing out for two years and two months in dry storage in my warehouse, this tea has mellowed and also developed greater complexity. I had no idea how this maocha would age here, since very few people in Guangdong and Hong Kong are aging sheng maocha (or even drinking it), so it was a real surprise to see just how well this tea had aged and how drastic the change in it was. Side by side with the original maocha, I wouldn't have been able to tell they were the same tea! When dry, the leaf proffers a hint of surprising sweetness, which was the first surprise for me when trying this tea again after two years!

The fresh milk note is now fleeting in the first few infusions, but a little more prominent in later infusions. With every sip of the liquor in the first few infusions, an aged book note is what is apparent first: then the rest of the aromatics hit your palate, and things get interesting. The sweet note is grape-like: the closest varietal to the aroma for me is probably Concord grape. This is followed up with a date-like note that was very unexpected! This tea has mild (but pleasant) bitterness and good huigan in the first few infusions and also excellent thick mouthfeel. There is also a mint-like note that is barely detectable early on, but much more prominent as you work your way through the material. The combination of grape, date and mint was not something I ever expected to taste together in pu erh!
