This is a lovely Bulang sheng with distinctive wildflower character. This is the second of my traditional Hong Kong-style house offerings, and the first one from my own 11th floor warehouse. Pu erh bricks and cakes are often sold broken down for ease of consumption by the end consumer here in Hong Kong, and this practice has a long history here. Most Hongkongers who drink pu erh never buy a brick, cake or tuo: instead, we buy loose tea to drop into a mug or teapot (less commonly, a gaiwan). Clean dry stored sheng is not as commonly sold this way, however, so this is a modern twist on something very traditional. Since Hong Kong is the city that set off the dry storage boom (with tea from Bulangshan, even), I'm coming full circle with this offering.

Loose pu erh (and other teas) in Hong Kong are sold using the traditional weight system. Four taels come out to approximately 150g, eight taels are approximately 300g, and a catty is around 600g, so I've decided to offer this tea up using the traditional Hong Kong (and Taiwanese) weight system instead of the modern PRC system.

I believe the maocha used in this production was from 2016. There is no smoke in this material, and none of the higher oxidation notes I'd get from a modern Dayi production. This material hasn't seen the same kind of oxidation, so there is no cantaloupe, date or grape in this tea as with a lot of modern pu erh. Just classic and distinctive Bulang sweet wildflower and honey, which is lovely. I pressure tested this tea in a 500ml pot today and it was pleasant drinking even when brewed at 5g/500ml (with refills when the astringency and bitterness climbed up). 

This tea has aged and mellowed out beautifully in my storage over the last two-to-three years. This tea has good calming energy and lovely kuwei (sweetness after bitterness). There is still some astringency and bitterness here when this tea is pushed, but it is very tolerable and the astringency and bitterness will continue to age out with more time in my storage. This tea is definitely ready to drink by my standards and I find myself reaching for this tea often. This tea is truly excellent value. Produced by a licensed factory, it meets Chinese standards for heavy metals and pesticides, and aside from a single hair, I haven't detected any other foreign matter in this material. I believe this tea will hold up well in storage and continue to improve with age, and I can't wait to see how this material progresses over the years!
