Description

March 2018: The current grade 1 shuixian from this vendor (which is offered here) is lovely! A friend and customer in Taiwan commented that this shuixian tasted aged to him and his girlfriend. I am drinking some now and I can definitely see that. The roast is not at all detectable in the brew when brewing in a 60ml 90s zini shuiping and I can detect black tea and citrus notes. There is also a little touch of almond in the finish. This is really excellent shuixian and good value too!

This is the better of the two standard grades of shuixian from the merchant who provided me with the top shelf shuixian. This tea was quite reasonably priced, which initially made me skeptical about the quality, but a well-known vendor from Taiwan who purchased a tael of this tea as a sample several years ago absolutely loved it, and suggested I try it too. I finally got around to buying some. While I am still awestruck by the top shelf shuixian I had a few days ago, I found this tea to be truly excellent for its price point.

The roast level is much lighter than the Three Stamp I also offer. It isn't roasted anywhere near as highly as my other high roast shuixian offerings. The current selection (May 2017) from this dealer is not bitter at all! There is a lovely, clean flavor to this tea, and my Hong Kong-born assistant much prefers this tea to the Three Stamp!

This tea also has surprisingly good longevity (it can handle multiple infusions very well), which is an indicator of good quality leaf. We got five or six good infusions when brewing with water at full boil. This tea, to me, is a great example of a Hong Kong-market shuixian. The classic shuixian flavor comes through clean and clear, but is wonderfully balanced. The classic roast and distinctive shuixian flavors play off each other beautifully.

This an excellent shuixian that would make a great daily drinker, and it is very reasonably priced, too. I like it enough that I am going to keep this tea in regular rotation, and put some aside for aging as well.

Please note: most traditional Hong Kong tea merchants do not offer discounts on volume until I am purchasing several kilograms at a time, and in some cases, no discounts are offered at all, even for ten kilos of a single tea or more. For this reason, I cannot offer a discount on larger purchases at this time.
