August 15th, 2021

Please note the pictures are of the 2020 batch, which looked very similar to the current 2021 batch.

This is an excellent green tieguanyin from one of my long-term suppliers here in Hong Kong. This is the second year running that I've purchased green tieguanyin from this family. This tea is surprisingly good value for the quality and quite different from my Anxi-direct tieguanyin. This HK family has long-standing connections in the tea industry, so they can often provide amazing tea for the money. This tea greatly surpassed my expectations.

I used 8.5g in a 100ml gaiwan to test this tea. This was a little too much leaf (the leaf expanded and filled the gaiwan), but the tea was very capable of handling this ratio without getting at all unpleasant. This tea is not astringent or bitter unless pushed extremely hard, and even then it never gets too intense. This is truly an excellent quality green tieguanyin.

In the cup, this tea is sweet, smooth and aromatic. The terroir from this tea is distinct from any other green tieguanyin I've had to date. Green tieguanyin gets a bad rap that I feel is undeserved. Some green tieguanyin is truly excellent. The low grade stuff certainly isn't however!

The liquor is somewhat minty (chlorophyll), especially in the first infusion. There is absolutely no astringency or bitterness in the first infusion, even with my very high ratio. I get some tropical fruit in the aftertaste, which isn't unusual for a high grade green tieguanyin: sweet pineapple is the dominant fruit note in the first infusion, but I also get some cantaloupe, date and even some sweet coconut later in the session.

When pushed hard, I only get mild astringency and bitterness that actually complement the overall profile of this tea.

My supplier suggested mixing the 2020 batch with more oxidized/roasted tieguanyin for a balanced profile. I haven't tried that myself, but I certainly will at some point.

This is a lovely tea I would recommend to anyone! Anxi tieguanyin quality has been improving every year for the last six years or so, and this is a great example of how the better quality modern Anxi teas perform today.

This tea has excellent longevity, and I quit before I brewed this tea out fully. This year's batch has a lovely calming effect as well.
