Description

March 18th, 2021

I purchased a single tong of this tea in October last year as a birthday present to myself. This tea skyrocketed in value in 2020. While the price has dropped some in 2021, prices on Dayi's cakes are rising again, and the Zodiac teas are some of the most popular teas among Dayi aficionados. This cake is pressed with aged material from the Lancang river basin area. The maocha was aged for three years by Dayi before pressing.

This tea was stored in Kunming from 2016 to 2020, and the cool, dry warehouse conditions in Kunming put this tea to sleep. For those who aren't aware, pu erh is very sensitive to environmental conditions, and several years of Kunming cryostorage can take a year or more to recover from, even in my dedicated Hong Kong warehouse. This tea is now waking back up, but I expect it to need another eight months to fully revive (possibly longer). With the 21% discount I am currently offering, this tea is sold below Dayi's MSRP for China. If you are looking for one or more of these cakes and are confident you can age it, this is a great deal. I expect market price to rise significantly this year.

The dry cake smells quite smokey: I believe this cake is now letting off smoke that stayed trapped due to the very conservative storage this tea has seen for most of its life. In the cup, this is a very smooth tea with tolerable astringency and bitterness. The cha qi from this tea is very powerfully calming. There is a light date aftertaste, but I believe this will become more prominent once the tea is fully woken up. In its current state, this tea will really show you how much storage matters! I'd definitely much rather drink Day's 1902 7542 from my own storage than this cake at this time, although this tea has much, much better cha qi.

This is a lovely tea that the market is very confident about. I can't wait to see how this tea opens up over the next few years! I'm a Chinese zodiac 'monkey,' so perhaps 2028 will be when this tea truly shines for me. This would make a great gift for the Chinese zodiac monkeys in your life!
