Description

March 24th, 2021

I purchased eight of these bricks from a Kunming wholesaler back in November 2018, and have aged them in my own warehouse in Hong Kong, where tea moves along very quickly. My specific storage environment never gets too humid, even without the use of dehumidifiers. None of the locally-stored tea I purchase turns out quite like mine, so my storage is very much my own specific thing!

The brick I tested smells sweet and faintly floral, with a hint of aged out smoke. The material is still greener than the Guangdong-stored version, which I also offer. In the cup, I get aged smoke, pleasant sweet huigan and excellent umami. My storage seems to bring out more umami than other storage environments in this region, which I believe is due to theanine preservation in my conditions. This is a smooth, pleasant tea, and a better daily drinker than a lot of Xiaguan tea in my opinion. Some Xiaguan teas are similarly easy to drink, but with less interesting flavor and aftertaste. This is definitely a very different experience due to the very different terroir from this material, and the processing is different as well.

As it cools, the astringency gets more prominent, and this is common with raw pu erh. The aftertaste is long lasting for plantation material, but not as long lasting as the Jinggu gushu I had yesterday (thanks Kab)! There are light black tea and wildflower notes in the aftertaste that are distinct from the wildflower notes in Dayi's Bulang or Xiaguan's Dali material.

This tea is pleasantly calming, but once this wears off, this tea has quite a caffeine wallop. This could be due to the inclusion of higher grade material in this brick. The material in these bricks is a mixed bag, and makes for a very interesting and pleasant drinking experience. Haiwan definitely know what they're doing, and this brick is definitely testament to how carefully thought out all of their productions are at all price points.

This is not bitter material, but the bitterness does become more prominent as I progress through the session and lengthen my infusions. This tea is more smokey and less bitter than the Guangdong stored version, in my opinion, but the smoke will dissipate further after a few more years in my storage. I can't wait to see how these turn out down the line! I get baby powder aged notes from the Guangdong-stored version of this brick, but these bricks from my storage have more origin character remaining. Comparing the two bricks might be very interesting, since their storage histories have taken them in different directions.

Later in the session, I get some aromatics that remind me of chenpi, but not all of the character I'd get from chenpi (just part of the range). I actually quite enjoy the smoke from this brick, but if you're smoke averse, this is likely not the tea for you, even if the smoke is aged out here.

This is a great daily drinker now and I'm offering it up at the same price as the Guangdong-stored version for now.
