These Haiwan bricks were dry stored in Guangdong for a decade. As with much of the dry storage in Guangdong, this tea was conservatively aged to minimize the chances of mold, and there is not a trace of mold on this brick. While I like my storage a little more natural since the tea ages faster and develops more aged character, careful Guangdong dry storage yields results that are often very pleasant to drink.

This brick really surprised us. It wasn't astringent or bitter, even when pushed. Well, maybe a tiny bit, but definitely not what I expected from a raw brick at all! The tea has aged notes that I'd find in my own Hong Kong storage, but the black tea and citrus notes are less prominent than if I'd stored this tea. Interestingly, I also got a hint of baby powder from the tea, which I normally only get from my dry storage shou!

This tea is clean, inoffensive and very pleasant to drink today. The leaves are larger and much less chopped than with bricks from the other big factories, which again, was a surprise. My assistant, Ophelia, used the Cantonese term for 'bittersweet' for this tea. While that is a term used for food, it perfectly encapsulated the quality of this tea: very lightly bitter with a lovely sweetness and huigan that lingers. The flavor lingers on the palate as well, which is a quality I associate with good base material. This tea is clean, easy to drink and very smooth, which makes it an excellent daily drinker! 

Interestingly, Ophelia didn't detect any astringency from this tea at all, but I noticed a little. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you do try this brick!

Brewing suggestion: Full boil, with water of low hardness (15-35 mg/L, with 1-3 mg/L of magnesium). Rinse once, and start with 30-45 second infusions for the first two or three infusions, then add 15-30 seconds to each successive infusion. If the liquor is too weak, add more time.
