This Xinhui chen pi was stored in Jiangmen, Guangdong, where the most renowned tangerine groves for chen pi in all of China are located. Aged Xinhui chen pi goes for top dollar for its medicinal qualities, which supposedly improve with age as different compounds begin to emanate from the peel as it breaks down.

This is a very high grade aged chen pi that has lovely incense-like aromas and aged tangerine aromas as well. I grew up eating candied tangerine peel, and the good quality chen pi we got down here in Hong Kong tasted much like this.

I tried some of this peel in hot water, and then with pu erh. The peel tastes much like it smells, and it took several long infusions before I was able to elicit bitterness, which was tolerable. There is an agarwood-like character to this peel that is absolutely lovely!

If you've been looking for good quality aged chen pi, this is it! I much prefer using good quality shu pu erh and adding the best chen pi to it. The shu pu erh stuffed tangerines that are commercially produced in Guangdong tend to be very disappointing as the pu erh used is of low quality and the chen pi is aged while exposed to the air. With good shou and good chen pi, the experience is just on another level entirely!

Brewing instructions: drink alone, or add to tea after shredding. Do not consume with green leafy vegetables!
