Description

These Menghai old tree shou mini bricks were pressed by Changtai back in 2005. I purchased six of these bricks directly from Changtai back in November 2018, and have aged them in my own warehouse ever since. I just got around to trying one today and was surprised by how sweet the flavor profile is! The bricks smell active and yeasty, like fresh bread, indicating the material is alive and actively breaking down. This is common in the first few years after shou arrives in Hong Kong from Kunming, and this aroma usually passes in year three or four (perhaps once the sugars in the material are all used up). This note is not too prominent in the cup, however.

The material used for this brick was of larger leaf grades. The flavor is sweetly aromatic with a hint of camphor in the first infusion that entirely dissipates in the second infusion. I will now transfer my sample brick to plastic to see if the aromatic complexity of this shou increases.

This is a very smooth, calming shou that goes down very easily. There is very minimal bitterness here and no astringency. This is a great choice for the shou aficionado who wants to try something a little different: Changtai was definitely well ahead of the curve with these little bricks!

Please note these bricks are no longer available from Changtai: once these are gone, they're gone for good!
