These gongting cakes have spent the last two years of their lives in my warehouse in Hong Kong, where they have been naturally dry stored eleven floors above street level! They spent the first eleven years of their lives in Kunming dry storage. When I cracked open the tong, the cakes didn't smell of much at all. As soon as the water hit the leaves, the sweet and alluring aroma filled the air! These cakes were made with excellent material and this tea far exceeded my expectations!

Two years down here has mellowed out the material, so it is much easier to drink now than it once was. The quality of the gongting (fine tips) used for this cake is outstanding, and the dry cake looks like finely chopped tobacco to me. The depth and intensity of flavor these leaves contain is shocking. The main note is a sweet, almost jujube-like note that is distinct from any other pu erh I've tried: perhaps due to the Mengku terroir. There is also a camphor-like note that is also distinct from any other pu erh I've tried, so this tea really makes for a unique tasting experience! There is also a little date in the flavor profile, which is always welcome as far as I'm concerned.

This is definitely some of the best shu pu erh I've ever had the opportunity to try! I only have six 145 gram cakes up for grabs. If you're a ripe pu erh aficionado, this is a great tea and made with simply outstanding material.
