These lovely Nixing gaiwans are handthrown with excellent clay! Each gaiwan is unique because of the ash glaze, and there is a little variation between them since they're handmade. Nixing clay is really excellent for high fire oolongs and pu erh, but in this size (185ml when full to the point that the lid just covers up all the liquid), I'd stick to using it for pu erh. Nixing clay mutes storage notes well and also enhances body and aroma. I feel Nixing clay is superior to modern zini (purple mud) clay, which is now often made 'purple' with chemical additives that I really don't feel comfortable about, as I can clearly smell the additive in the clay! Nixing clay performs much like older purple clay, and is just the right level of muting (comparable to qing shui ni).

These gaiwans are excellent value and have great heat retention. They make a very nice alternative to a clay teapot!
